You can't make matcha properly with a teaspoon in a mug: the powder clumps and no foam forms. A bamboo whisk (chasen) breaks up the lumps and aerates the tea in a matter of seconds.

The set comes with instructions: how much powder, what water temperature and which whisking motion gives a thick, fine foam.
